If you’re pregnant and living in Yarrabilba or Flagstone, there’s a good chance your back has been giving you grief.
Maybe it started as a dull ache in your lower back after a long day. Then it moved into your hips. Then one morning, you woke up, and your pelvis felt like it had been through a washing machine. You Googled “pregnancy back pain relief near me” and found yourself wondering whether a chiropractor was a safe option or something to avoid until after the baby arrives.
The short answer is: chiropractic care is safe throughout pregnancy, and for many women in the Logan southside corridor, it’s the most effective thing they try. At Jimboomba Chiropractic, just 10-14 minutes from Yarrabilba and 8-12 minutes from Flagstone, we work with pregnant women at every stage of their pregnancy, from the first trimester all the way to the week before their due date.
This article answers every question you probably have about safety, about what actually happens in a session, about the Webster Technique, and about what kind of results you can realistically expect.

Why Does Pregnancy Cause So Much Back Pain?
The Physical Changes That Put Pressure on Your Spine
Pregnancy doesn’t cause back pain because something is going wrong. It causes back pain because your body is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do, and the changes required to grow and carry a baby place significant mechanical stress on the spine, pelvis, and surrounding muscles.
Here’s what’s happening inside your body:
- Relaxin is released. This hormone loosens the ligaments and joints in your pelvis to prepare for birth. The problem is, it also loosens joints throughout the entire body, including the lumbar spine, reducing stability and increasing the likelihood of joint irritation.
- Your centre of gravity shifts forward. As your belly grows, the natural curve of your lower back (the lumbar lordosis) increases. This puts extra compression on the facet joints and lumbar discs, and overworks the muscles of the lower back, trying to compensate.
- Your pelvis tilts. The growing uterus pulls on the pelvis, often causing it to tip forward (anterior pelvic tilt). This affects how forces are distributed through the sacroiliac joints, one of the most common sites of pregnancy pain.
- Abdominal muscles weaken. As the abdominals stretch to accommodate the baby, they provide less support to the spine, leaving the back muscles to pick up the load.
The result? Lower back pain, pelvic pain, hip pain, leg pain often all at once, and often getting worse as the pregnancy progresses.
Common Pregnancy Pain Patterns We See in Yarrabilba & Flagstone Mums
In our Jimboomba clinic, the pregnancy-related presentations we see most from Yarrabilba and Flagstone patients fall into a few clear patterns:
- Sacroiliac (SI) joint pain: aching deep in one or both buttocks, sometimes radiating into the hip or thigh
- Pelvic girdle pain: a wide, deep ache across the front and back of the pelvis, often worse with walking, climbing stairs, or rolling over in bed
- Lumbar back pain: central or bilateral lower back pain, typically worse by the end of the day
- Sciatica: sharp, burning, or electric pain shooting from the lower back or buttock into the leg, sometimes with numbness or tingling in the foot
- Upper back and rib pain: tension across the thoracic spine and between the shoulder blades, often from postural changes in the later trimesters
If any of these sound familiar, you’re in good company. According to Healthdirect Australia, back pain affects approximately 50–80% of pregnant women at some point during their pregnancy, making it one of the most universal pregnancy experiences there is.
Is Chiropractic Care Safe During Pregnancy?
This is the first question almost every pregnant patient asks us. And it’s the right question to ask.
Yes, chiropractic care is safe during pregnancy when performed by a trained, qualified chiropractor. The techniques used in pregnancy chiropractic are specifically adapted to accommodate your growing belly, your looser joints, and your changing centre of gravity.
What the Evidence Says
The Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (CAA) recognises chiropractic as a safe, clinically-appropriate intervention for musculoskeletal pain during pregnancy. Multiple peer-reviewed studies have examined the use of spinal manipulation during pregnancy and found it to be both safe and effective for lower back and pelvic pain when performed by a qualified practitioner.
No forceful, high-impact techniques are used during pregnancy. No lying flat on your back (which can compress the vena cava). No prone (face-down) positions without proper support. The entire approach is adapted for your specific stage of pregnancy and comfort level.
There are a small number of contraindications for example, if you have placenta praevia, pre-eclampsia, or are experiencing vaginal bleeding, chiropractic care may not be appropriate, and we would refer you to your obstetrician. We take a thorough health history at your first appointment, specifically to identify any such situations.
What a Pregnancy-Safe Chiropractic Session Actually Looks Like
Many women imagine that chiropractic care involves lying flat and having someone push hard on their back. During pregnancy, it looks nothing like that.
At Jimboomba Chiropractic, pregnancy sessions typically involve:
- Side-lying positioning: you lie on your side with pillows supporting your belly and between your knees for comfort throughout
- Gentle, low-force adjustments: targeted to the pelvis, sacroiliac joints, and lumbar spine using very controlled, gentle pressure
- Soft tissue work: releasing tension in the surrounding muscles and ligaments without high-force manipulation
- The Activator Method (where appropriate): a small instrument-assisted technique that delivers a precise, gentle impulse to specific joints, ideal for patients who prefer no manual force at all
- Postural and exercise guidance: specific stretches and positions to support your spine between appointments
Sessions are relaxed, comfortable, and unhurried. Most pregnant patients tell us they leave feeling significantly more comfortable than when they arrived.
How Jimboomba Chiropractic Helps Pregnancy Back Pain Specifically
The Webster Technique: What It Is and Why It Matters
The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment method developed for pregnant women. It focuses on the sacrum and its relationship to the pelvis, assessing for sacral misalignment and associated soft tissue tension that can contribute to pelvic imbalance.
When the pelvis is balanced with the sacrum sitting correctly between the two iliac bones, there is less tension on the uterine ligaments and more space for the baby to move freely. Many obstetricians and midwives in the Logan region are familiar with the Webster Technique and happy for their patients to use it.
At Jimboomba Chiropractic, we use the Webster Technique as part of our standard pregnancy chiropractic assessment. It’s gentle, completely safe, and specifically designed for your pregnant body.
Pelvic Girdle Pain and Pubic Symphysis Discomfort
Pelvic girdle pain (PGP) is one of the most debilitating pregnancy complaints and one of the most undertreated, because many women are told to simply “rest and wait it out.”
PGP occurs when the sacroiliac joints and/or the pubic symphysis (the joint at the front of the pelvis) become irritated due to excessive laxity from relaxing. It can make walking, climbing stairs, getting in and out of the car, and turning over in bed genuinely painful.
Chiropractic care for PGP focuses on:
- Restoring balance to the pelvis with gentle sacroiliac adjustments
- Reducing inflammation and tension in the surrounding soft tissues
- Teaching positions and movements that reduce joint stress day to day
- Recommending a pregnancy support belt if appropriate
Many of our Yarrabilba and Flagstone patients with PGP notice meaningful improvement within 3–5 sessions. For some, the relief from even the first session is significant.
Sciatica During Pregnancy
Sciatic nerve pain during pregnancy is extremely common and extremely uncomfortable. The growing uterus can press directly on the sciatic nerve, and changes in pelvic posture can irritate it at the level of the piriformis muscle in the buttock.
Symptoms include:
- Sharp, shooting pain from the lower back or buttock down into one leg
- Burning or electric pain in the thigh or calf
- Numbness or tingling in the foot or toes
- Pain that’s worse when sitting, standing for long periods, or getting up from a chair
Chiropractic treatment for pregnancy-related sciatica involves gentle lumbar adjustments to relieve nerve pressure, soft tissue release of the piriformis and gluteal muscles, and specific stretches to decompress the nerve between appointments.
Round Ligament Pain and Upper Back Tension
Round ligament pain sharp, stabbing discomfort in the lower abdomen or groin when you move suddenly is caused by the rapid stretching of the ligaments supporting the uterus. While chiropractic cannot directly treat the round ligaments, pelvic alignment influences how much tension is placed on these structures.
Upper back and rib pain, particularly common in the second and third trimesters as the ribcage expands, responds very well to gentle thoracic spine adjustments and postural correction advice.
Trimester-by-Trimester: When to Start Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy
One of the most common misconceptions is that you should wait until the pain is severe before coming in. In our experience, the opposite is true; earlier care produces better outcomes.
First Trimester (Weeks 1–13) This is an ideal time to establish baseline pelvic alignment before the hormonal and structural changes of pregnancy accelerate. If you have pre-existing lower back issues, starting care in the first trimester gives your body the best foundation for what’s ahead. Nausea and fatigue are often significant in this trimester let us know, and we’ll keep sessions short and well-supported.
Second Trimester (Weeks 14–27) This is when most pregnancy back pain kicks in, as relaxin levels remain elevated and the growing belly begins to shift your centre of gravity. Pelvic girdle pain, SI joint pain, and round ligament pain are most common in this window. This is also when the Webster Technique becomes particularly relevant for pelvic balance.
Third Trimester (Weeks 28–40) Many women worry that they’re “too big” to see a chiropractor. You’re not. We see patients up to the week before their due date. Sciatica, lower back pain, rib pain, and difficulty sleeping are at their peak in the third trimester, and chiropractic care continues to be both safe and effective. Maintaining pelvic alignment in the final weeks may also support an optimal foetal position for birth.
What to Expect at Your First Pregnancy Chiropractic Appointment
If you’re coming to us from Yarrabilba or Flagstone for the first time, here’s exactly what will happen:

Questions Yarrabilba & Flagstone Mums Ask Us Most
Can my GP or midwife refer me to a chiropractor during pregnancy? Yes, and many do. However, no referral is required. You can book directly with us online or by phone. If your GP or midwife has specific concerns, we’re happy to correspond with them or share treatment notes.
Will I be adjusted face down? No. We never use prone (face-down) positioning during pregnancy. All treatment is performed in comfortable side-lying positions with full belly and knee support. You will be comfortable throughout.
How many sessions will I need? This depends on the nature of your pain and how long it’s been present. Pregnancy-related back pain that started recently (within the last few weeks) often responds in 3–6 sessions. Longer-standing issues may take a little longer. We will give you a clear, honest estimate at your first appointment.
Can chiropractic help turn a breech baby? The Webster Technique is not a technique for turning babies, it’s a pelvic balancing method. However, when pelvic balance is restored, some babies do reposition naturally as there is more space in the uterus. We always make this distinction clearly with our patients, and encourage close communication with your obstetrician or midwife about foetal position.
Is it safe to have chiropractic care right up until my due date? Yes. We see patients in the final weeks of pregnancy regularly. Care is adapted as needed in very late pregnancy; sessions are typically shorter and focused primarily on the pelvis and lower back.
